Short answer: As of October 2026, SALT offers bitcoin-backed loans in 47 U.S. states plus Washington, D.C., along with Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and nine other countries. The three U.S. states not currently on SALT’s lending list are New York, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The most current list always lives on SALT’s Where We Lend page.
If you have ever searched for “crypto loans near me” or “can I get a bitcoin loan in my state,” you have probably noticed that the answer is rarely a simple yes. Crypto-backed lending is regulated at the state level in the U.S., which means a lender can be fully available in Texas and unavailable just across the border. This guide walks through where SALT lends today, why availability differs from state to state, and how to check your own eligibility before you apply.

U.S. States Where SALT Does Not Currently Lend
SALT does not currently offer loans to residents of these three states:
- New York
- North Dakota
- South Dakota
Each state sets its own licensing requirements for lenders, and some states also have rules aimed specifically at digital asset businesses. New York, for example, has its own virtual currency licensing framework administered by the state’s Department of Financial Services. A state not appearing on the list today does not mean it never will. SALT has added states over time as licenses are approved, and residents of unlisted states can register their interest (more on that below).
International Locations Where SALT Lends
Outside the 50 states, SALT also lends in these jurisdictions:
- North America: Canada, Puerto Rico
- South America: Brazil
- Europe: Portugal, Switzerland, United Kingdom
- Asia: United Arab Emirates, Viet Nam
- Oceania: Australia, New Zealand, Northern Mariana Islands
SALT also publishes a separate list of ineligible jurisdictions where it does not provide services. If you live outside the U.S. and your country does not appear on either list, the safest assumption is that loans are not yet available there.
Personal Loans vs. Business Loans: Availability Can Differ
Availability is not always the same for every loan type. SALT’s Where We Lend map separates jurisdictions where both personal and business loans are offered from jurisdictions where only business loans are offered. That distinction exists because consumer lending and commercial lending are often governed by different licenses and rules.
If you are borrowing on behalf of a company, the options may be broader than they are for an individual. Our guide to how businesses use crypto-backed credit for working capital covers how business borrowing works in more detail.
Why Crypto Loan Availability Varies by State
Bitcoin-backed loans are still loans. The collateral is digital, but the lending relationship is regulated much like any other consumer or commercial credit product. A few factors drive the differences you see from one state to the next.
State Lending Licenses
Most states require a lender to hold a state-issued license before making loans to residents. These go by different names depending on the state. California loans, for instance, are made under the California Financing Law. In Idaho, SALT operates as a licensed regulated lender, and in Michigan it holds a regulatory loan license. Each license comes with its own application process, ongoing reporting, and examinations. SALT’s Licenses page lists the licenses it currently holds.
Interest Rate and Fee Rules
States set different limits on interest rates, fees, and loan terms. A lender has to structure its products to fit each state’s rules, which can affect whether a product is offered there at all.
Digital Asset Regulation
Some states layer additional requirements onto businesses that handle digital assets. Those rules can change how a lender holds collateral or what disclosures it must provide, and they add to the time it takes to enter a new market.
Why Licensing Should Matter When You Choose a Crypto Lender
It can be tempting to look past licensing and focus on rates alone, but a lender’s licensing status tells you a lot. A state-licensed lender is subject to oversight, has a regulator you can file a complaint with, and has to follow that state’s consumer protection rules. That is meaningful protection when you are handing over collateral.
You can verify any U.S. lender’s licenses for free through NMLS Consumer Access. SALT loans are originated by SALT Lending LLC, NMLS ID 1711910. For a deeper look at evaluating lenders, including custody and rehypothecation, read Are Bitcoin-Backed Loans Safe?
How to Check Whether SALT Lends in Your State
- Visit SALT’s Where We Lend page and find your state or country on the list.
- Confirm the loan type. Check whether your location is marked for personal and business loans or for business loans only.
- Estimate your loan using the bitcoin loan calculator to see how much you could borrow based on your collateral. Our guide on how much you can borrow against your bitcoin explains the math.
- Create an account and apply. The full process, from sign-up to funding, is covered in How to Get a Bitcoin-Backed Loan.
What to Do If Your State Isn’t Listed Yet
If your location is not on the list, you can still let SALT know you are interested. SALT uses loan requests from unlisted locations to measure demand and decide where to expand next, and it will notify you when lending becomes available in your area. The process takes a few minutes:
- Sign up for a free SALT account.
- Go to BORROW in SALT’s Marketplace and choose Personal or Business.
- Complete the loan calculator and submit your request to join the demand queue.
In the meantime, avoid the temptation to work around state rules, such as by listing an address where you do not actually reside. Your loan agreement depends on accurate residency information, and misrepresenting it can create serious problems later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are bitcoin-backed loans legal in every U.S. state?
Bitcoin-backed loans are a legal financial product, but each lender must be properly licensed in every state where it lends. That is why availability depends on the lender as well as the state. SALT currently lends in 47 states plus Washington, D.C.
Does SALT offer bitcoin-backed loans in New York?
Not at this time. New York, North Dakota, and South Dakota are not currently on SALT’s lending list. New York residents can submit a loan request to be notified if availability changes.
Can I get a crypto loan from SALT if I live outside the U.S.?
Yes, in certain countries. SALT lends in Canada, Brazil, Portugal, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Viet Nam, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands. See the Where We Lend page for the latest list.
Is availability the same for personal and business loans?
Not always. Some jurisdictions are approved for both personal and business loans, while others are approved for business loans only. The map on the Where We Lend page shows which applies to each location.
What happens if I move to a different state while I have a loan?
Your loan is governed by your loan agreement, which reflects your jurisdiction at the time it was issued. If you are planning a move, contact SALT Loan Support at +1 (800) 931-1259 before you relocate so the team can review what it means for your account.
How can I verify that a crypto lender is licensed in my state?
Search the lender’s name or NMLS ID on NMLS Consumer Access. You can also check the lender’s own licensing disclosures. SALT’s are listed on its Licenses page.
How often does SALT add new states?
There is no fixed schedule, since each expansion depends on a state license being approved. Maryland was added in October 2026. Submitting a loan request is the best way to be notified when your location becomes available.
